It was at Anzio that the enemy dubbed the 1st Special Service Force as the “Devils Brigade. They earned their menacing nickname in Italy during a 99-day standoff at Anzio. Because they conducted silent, aggressive nighttime raids with their faces blackened by boot polish, terrified German soldiers referred to them as the "Schwarz Teufel" (Black Devils).
